School Club Zambia is a UK and Zambian charity run by a small team of dedicated volunteers and staff in the UK and the rural fishing village of Siansowa (Zambia) where our office is based.  We are funded by a diverse range of UK Trusts and Foundations; UK and Zambian corporations and individuals, who are as passionate as we are about qualitative and relevant education opportunities for all youth in Zambia.  

Zambia is a vibrant country in Southern Africa, sharing borders with the Congo, Zimbabwe, Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Botswana and Namibia. Approximately 90% of the population is employed in the informal sector, leading to many young people starting their own businesses after school in order to make a living.

We support rural schools to run vocational clubs that develop trade skills and we establish school-run businesses. The businesses provide students with hands on experience of start-up entrepreneurship, mostly in a rural setting. Across our five partner schools, we currently support 10 businesses, many of which have a strong emphasis on providing food and skills development to their surrounding communities.

In 2015 we launched a literacy programme with the aim of reducing the high illiteracy rates at our schools whilst simultaneously boosting participation in our skills training workshops.  During the same year, we also expanded our reach to focus on the unique challenges girls face in completing their education in rural Zambia.

As we enter our 7th year of operation in Zambia, we would like to recruit a dynamic and forward thinking individual to help us take our fundraising and partnership strategy to the next level. 

Reporting to:

School Club Zambia’s Senior Manager

Role Responsibilities:

  • To lead in the development of the organisation’s annual and three-year fundraising and partnership strategy for 2018 and 2018 - 2021. (10%)
  • To work alongside senior staff and UK and Zambian Boards, to develop and expand the organisation’s existing income streams.  (5%)
  • Write and submit fundraising applications to UK Trusts and Foundations to assist the organisation in meeting its annual and three-year operational budgets.  (40%)
  • To lead in training the team in Zambia in researching and developing local and international partnerships.  (25%)
  • To provide hands on support to the team in Zambia in organising one fundraising event with the aim of raising the profile of the organisation and developing new innovative income streams within country. (15%)
  • To complete a practical end report on developing sustainable fundraising and partnership initiatives for use within SCZ and for our partners within the field. (5%)

Personal Skills required:

  • A minimum of 1 – 2 years of experience in fundraising from Trusts and Foundations in the UK. Experience in community and events fundraising highly preferable.
  • Relevant experience in training small groups using participatory methods.
  • Experience of working or volunteering in a developing country, preferably in Africa.
  • Ability and willingness to adapt to living in a remote and rural part of Africa,
  • A self-starter, able to work alone and as part of a team.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Belief in and commitment to School Club Zambia’s values and ability to uphold them personally.

Logistics and Benefits:

The Fundraising and Partnerships Officer will be provided with the following -

  • A return flight from the UK 
  • A volunteer stipend of US $500 a month, paid within country in the local currency
  • Shared accommodation
  • A work visa for Zambia if necessary

School Club Zambia will also provide the following support:

  • A pre-assignment briefing session 
  • Logistical support in travel and medical arrangements prior to departure
  • Logistical support and orientation on arrival and during placement
