Job Description

The Humane League UK is seeking an experienced individual in building programs to start our development work in the UK. You will have at least 5 years experience managing a team and working with large donors and have a detailed understanding of how to manage grants from end to end. A credible influencer and communicator, you will have an inclusive, consultative and adaptive approach to decision-making. This position is with our UK organisation and you will need to be located close to London.

This is an outstanding opportunity for a talented fundraiser to make their mark and build The Humane League UK’s successes to reduce the suffering of animals. The individual will have exceptional interpersonal skills: tactful, diplomatic and confident in managing and developing relationships with a diverse range of donors and volunteers.

Reporting to the Managing Director UK and coordinating with Vice-President of Development US.

The key focus of the role will be:

  1. Seeking, managing and maximising key large donors (who give more than £5,000), grant-making trusts and foundations
  2. Ensuring a focus on new opportunities, undertaking the necessary research to identify
    potential funders
  3. Developing a range of engaging proposals around key aspects of The Humane League UK’s work
  4. Establishing and managing the Development team as The Humane League expands and ensuring delivery of their objectives

Primary duties include:

Developing and implementing a comprehensive, annual fundraising plan and timeline to include:

Major gifts program (50%)

  • Analyse prospects, oversee cultivation and solicitation
  • Write proposals based on organizational needs and donors’ interests
  • Prepare regular updates and facilitate frequent communication with major donors
  • Attends meetings to develop contacts and maintain relationships with major donors

Corporations Grants & Foundations (15%)

  • Research prospects, write proposals & reports

Peer-to-peer fundraising & grassroots (15%)

  • Recruit and liaise with Team Advisors
  • Develop recruitment and support materials
  • Manage communications (e-newsletters, national posts in team FB groups, Twitter, Instagram)
  • Advise Volunteer Coordinators on strategy

Online giving and annual campaign & special appeals (10%)

  • Manage the production, coordination, and utilisation of solicitation materials
  • Develop and implement a stewardship program for donors that will include cultivation events, special programs, and gift-recognition policy
  • Oversee and refine donor files and acknowledgments
  • Manage content of donation web pages
  • Manage relationship with vendors

Establishing and managing a growing team (10%)

  • Establish the development program and team in the UK, working closely with Managing Director UK and Director of Development US
  • Leads hiring/promoting/termination of members within the Development team

Skills Required

  • Proven experience with major-gifts non-profit fundraising required, including a track record of successful solicitation of gifts at the £5K level and above
  • A proven track record of meeting challenging targets  and increasing income from existing funders
  • Good understanding of the UK funding landscape
  • Excellent project-management, strategic-thinking and analytical skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Proven ability to maintain professional working relationships with colleagues, members and supporters
  • Ability to work on own initiative, meeting objectives and tight deadlines under pressure
  • Line management experience
  • Willingness and ability to travel
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Commitment to the objectives of The Humane League
  • Computer literate with database experience

Desirable

  • Experience of working with trust and grant funders
  • Experience of soliciting legacies and planned gifts
  • Extensive knowledge of farm animal protection issues
  • Previous work with an animal welfare/rights organisation


This is a full-time, remote position based in the United Kingdom. Starting salary £40,000 per annum.
